KUCHING: A marathon will be held at Batang Sadong Bridge to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the longest river bridge in Malaysia on Dec 10-11.

The marathon will serve as a good platform and opportunity to give runners the confidence to travel to Sarawak again, by putting Sarawak on the map as a travel destination.

“There are some very keen runners and we have been experiencing more especially with the virtual participation. And local homestays will be available for the travelling runners,” said the federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

She announced the hosting of the marathon during a press conference upon her arrival from Kuala Lumpur at the Kuching International Airport yesterday (Oct 20).

“We are arranging to include some performances in arts and culture of the surrounding communities. To ensure a wholesome experience, we are also in the midst of discussion with nearby homestay operators as well as longhouses to experience the various races such as Malay, Bugis and Iban to name a few,” she added.

On the standard operating procedures (SOPs), she said: “I think most of us have got our complete two doses. Of course, if we are running close to each other then we have to put on our masks.

“To me this is a run, just keep your masks on and keep your hand sanitisers and keep your distance. The basic criteria is that all participants must have two doses of vaccines,” she added.

Meanwhile, organiser and chief executive officer of Carus Sport and Event, Carter Wei said the marathon would consist of four categories —42km run, a 21km half marathon, 10km and a 3km fun run for both men and women.
