KUCHING: Sixteen gym instructors including 12 from the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) and four from the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) High performance Unit (HPU) attended the Gym Instructor Training – Level 1 coaching certification from Dec 7 to 11 at CFK Training Ground, Canaan Square Kuching.
It is aimed at up-skilling MSNS and SSC gym instructors on the multi-faceted role of a gym instructor, from coaching each individual athlete on the sports specific training to recovery and strength and conditioning.
The course was organised by Kuching Fitness Association and conducted by certified instructors from CFK Training.
The five-day course served to help improve and educate existing gym instructors from MSNS & SSC throughout Sarawak, giving them more tools in their skill set to help train our state’s athletes in the latest training methodology.
Among the topics covered were weight training, circuit/HIIT training, specific sport exercise, agility training, bodyweight workouts and active recovery.
The sessions were conducted by instructors Clement Lai, Carter Wei and Maxime Jamelin while the course coordinator was Jubali Suhaili from SSC.
SSC chief executive officer Dr Ong Kong Swee closed the course and presented the certificates to the participants.
“It is high time for them to get a new approach in physical conditioning and how to best coach the athletes, because most of our grassroots athletes have to go under a gym instructor for their physical fitness,” said Ong.
“Our Gym Instructors need up-skilling and improvement from year to year. We will be organising more courses to help our gym instructors improve and get to a higher standard.
“This will in turn translate to better strength and conditioning of our athletes that will ultimately lead to improved performances and reduce injuries,” he added.
