Earlier this month, the inaugural Wallace Evolution Run 2023 was held in Sarawak, Malaysia, organised by The Bold Warriors Adventure and Exploration Club (BWAE). The Wallace Evolution Run 2023, however, was not just a race; it was a journey into the heart of evolutionary science and the lush landscapes of Sarawak, paying homage to the visionary contributions of Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace, two naturalists who independently formulated the theory of evolution through natural selection in the mid-19th century.
The race was aptly named after two Wallaces – Alfred Russel Wallace, the unsung hero of evolutionary biology, who made a remarkable discovery in Sarawak, and Ali Wallace a Malay man from Sarawak who accompanied and assisted Alfred Russel in his travels and explorations from 1855 to 1862.
Initially recruited as a cook for Alfred Russell’s expedition Ali was later responsible for independently collecting many significant specimens that are credited to Alfred Russell. It was estimated that Ali prepared nearly 5,150 bird specimens – many of which continue to survive in collections of natural history museums – and had also made observations of the birds and the people which he then communicated to Alfred Russell.
With Ali’s assistance, Alfred Russell’s explorations amidst Sarawak’s biodiversity led to the independent formulation of the theory of evolution. The Wallace Evolution Run 2023, thus, commemorates the extraordinary achievement and remarkable discovery and pays tribute to this enduring legacy.
The Wallace Evolution Run 2023 kicked off at Wallace Point in Santubong, Sarawak, at the site where the Wallace Centre which is planned to be housed in a late colonial-era building currently being refurbished. This site is known to sit on the plot of the original bungalow built for James Brooke, Alfred Russel Wallace stayed circa 1854-55. It is there where he wrote the paper that became known as the “Sarawak Law” in which he figured the theory of evolution slightly ahead of Darwin’s writings on the subject. Wallace Point is perfect for awakening the spirit of adventure and discovery, surrounded by the natural beauty that inspired Alfred Russel Wallace.
Alongside the archaeological-themed Wallace Evolution costume race, other activities were concurrently held to emphasise the theme of this extraordinary journey into the world of science, exploration, and adventure. The fun activities include a scavenger hunt and educational activities, a local community vendor showcase, an exclusive archaeology exhibition, and a Grand Lucky Draw with exciting prizes.
The Wallace Evolution Run 2023 was indeed an unforgettable experience for all participants and served as a wonderful celebration of the convergence of science and adventure in the splendour of Sarawak’s biodiversity.
